This Charleston
church, erected 1811 - 1816, serves as the Cathedral for the Dioscese
of South Carolina.
It was extensively
damaged by Hurricane Hugo in September 1989. The Roof of the church
was severely damaged during the storm. It had huge holes in it,
one large enough to drive a truck through. As a result, the interior
plaster was ruined from exposure to rain and the vaulted plaster
ceiling needed replaced.
Mistick
was chosen as the General Contractor for the church restoration.
The job involved structurally rebuilding the roof and cornice
of the building, replastering most of the interior including a
large barrel vault, refinishing the heart pine floor and mahogany
pews, installing new mechanical systems, and repainting both the
interior and extertior.
The building
was completed in time for Christmas services in 1990.
The restoration
was featured in Walls & Ceilings
Magazine in March 1991.
