One goal
of the master plan at Robert Morris College is to create a sense
of community through a village-like housing atmosphere. The college
took a major step toward that goal with the recent opening of
a $3.8 million, apartment-style student housing building.
The structure
is efficient in its design and construction. Each floor of the
four-story building holds four wings, with two units per wing.
Each unit has up to four individual bedrooms, two full baths,
and equipped kitchen/dining area with living area. The pin-wheel
design allows the building's center core to provide a gathering
space for residents. Each laundry room is also accessed off the
core. Wings were expanded as needed in order to create several
larger, handicapped accessible apartments.
The College
selected Mistick Construction for the design/build project based
upon Mistick’s vision for the building, its ability to meet
the rapid project schedule and its reputation for high-quality,
cost-effective, sustainable construction.
The Robert
Morris building contains 125 beds in 31 four bedroom apartments
and a one-bedroom unit for the resident manager. The four-bedroom
units have a minimum of 900 net sq. ft., or 225 net sq. ft. per
occupant.
